Juliana Prescott from PVG Prescott's Vine Grafting P/L came
to Silverstream to start the work on grafting 1 hec of merlot over to pinot,
and 1 hec of chardonnay to Riesling 31/12/2009.
Juliana has been contract field grafting since 2000. She promised a strike
rate of between 95% - 99% subject to all variable factors being in place.
She believes top working is an important alternative to replanting and is of
great assistance to the Australian grape grower. Her promise was that
during the grafting process, with healthy vines, we would expect to lose
only one year of fruit production. With the following year, the vines
producing up to 3/4 of the average yield, depending on variety, vine vigour
and vineyard management.
The staff at Silverstream participated with Juliana by sourcing the budwood
required for both varieties, and with good management, we are now 12 months
into the operation and looking forward to picking these first grapes in a
month or two from now.
